A concerning rise in HIV cases has been reported in Islamabad, according to an official health report.
The data shows 498 HIV cases were reported in 2025, while an additional 618 new cases emerged between January 2025 and March 2026.
On average, more than 41 new cases are being reported every month in the city, highlighting a growing public health challenge.
The report indicates that 397 men, 106 women, 93 transgender individuals, and 22 children are among the infected patients.
During the first quarter of 2026 alone, 120 new cases were recorded, with fluctuations seen across different months of the year.
Health experts suggest that drug abuse, particularly methamphetamine use (commonly known as ice), is contributing to risky behavior and increased transmission.
Pakistan’s overall estimated HIV-positive population stands at around 350,000, underscoring the need for stronger preventive measures and awareness campaigns.
