Israeli strikes South Lebanon have escalated tensions once again after at least five people were killed in air and drone attacks shortly after a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah reportedly came into effect, Lebanese state media said.
According to Lebanon’s National News Agency (NNA), Israeli warplanes and drones carried out multiple strikes across the Nabatieh region overnight into Saturday morning, destroying residential buildings and homes in several areas.
The report also stated that Israeli artillery shelled Nabatieh and surrounding outskirts before dawn, further intensifying damage in civilian areas and raising concerns over renewed escalation despite the truce.
The ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah was reportedly agreed on Friday following an increase in cross-border hostilities. A US official confirmed that the agreement was set to take effect at 4 p.m. local time.
However, the situation on the ground quickly raised doubts about the durability of the truce as reports of continued military activity emerged only hours after its implementation.
The Israeli strikes South Lebanon incident highlights the fragile nature of ceasefire arrangements in the region, where past agreements have frequently faced violations or breakdowns shortly after announcement.
International observers have expressed concern over the renewed violence and urged all parties to respect the ceasefire terms and protect civilian populations amid ongoing instability in southern Lebanon.
