The Nepra fuel price adjustment hearing was held on Wednesday as the power regulator reviewed a request by the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) seeking an increase in electricity tariffs due to higher fuel costs in June.
According to Nepra officials, CPPA has requested an increase of Rs1.20 per unit in electricity prices. The agency informed the hearing that 13.07 billion units of electricity were sold during June.
CPPA officials said the estimated fuel cost for electricity generation during the month was Rs7.71 per unit. However, the actual fuel cost reached Rs8.91 per unit, creating a difference that led to the tariff adjustment request.
The CPPA managing director explained that expensive liquefied natural gas (LNG) contributed to increased electricity production costs during June. Higher fuel expenses have continued to affect power generation costs across the country.
During the hearing, Nepra member Maqsood Anwar said consumers should not only receive promises of cheaper electricity but practical steps should be taken to reduce power costs. He emphasized the need for effective measures in the energy sector.
The hearing on the monthly fuel cost adjustment request was completed, while Nepra will announce its final decision after reviewing the details submitted by the power purchasing agency.
The outcome of the Nepra fuel price adjustment decision will determine whether consumers face an additional electricity burden or receive relief. The decision is expected to have an impact on monthly power bills across Pakistan.
