Newly Elected Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly Members Sworn In

The newly elected members of the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly officially took oath on Monday during a ceremonial session held at the Assembly Hall in Gilgit, marking the beginning of a new five-year parliamentary term. The oath-taking ceremony formally completed the formation process of the new provincial legislature.

According to the Election Commission, final results for all 24 constituencies were announced on June 17, nearly ten days after polling. The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) emerged as the largest political force in the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly with 11 seats, securing a leading position in the region’s new political landscape.

The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) secured six seats, becoming the second-largest party in the house. Meanwhile, the Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party strengthened its presence after several independent candidates joined its ranks following the election, making it a notable parliamentary group.

Other parties also managed representation in the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly, with the Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen winning one seat. Additionally, PTI-backed independent candidates secured two seats, reflecting a diverse political composition in the newly formed assembly.

Outgoing Speaker Advocate Nazir Ahmed administered the oath to the newly elected lawmakers. During the ceremony, all members pledged to uphold the constitution, serve the public, and perform their legislative duties with integrity and dedication.

Following the oath-taking, the assembly is scheduled to begin its formal proceedings, including elections for key positions such as the Speaker, Deputy Speaker, and Leader of the House. These appointments are expected to shape the initial direction of governance in the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly.

Political negotiations among major parties have already begun regarding the formation of the regional government. The PPP is expected to secure the Chief Minister’s position, while key parliamentary posts are likely to be distributed among coalition partners, setting the stage for the next phase of governance in Gilgit-Baltistan.
