Pakistan Marks 79th Independence Day With Calls for Unity and Reform

Pakistan celebrates Pakistan Independence Day 2026 with national ceremonies and renewed calls for unity, institutional reform, economic progress and peace. Civilian and military leaders paid tribute to the sacrifices behind the creation of the country while outlining priorities for its future.

The day began with a 31-gun salute in Islamabad and a 21-gun salute at provincial headquarters. Flag-hoisting ceremonies were held at important institutions, while a change-of-guards ceremony took place at the mausoleum of Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah in Karachi.

President Asif Ali Zardari said independence carried responsibilities for every generation. He linked Pakistan’s security with regional peace and said the country wanted disputes to be resolved through diplomacy. He also called for greater investment in education, skills, employment and institutional reforms.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif highlighted economic stability and said the government was working to transform Pakistan into a developed economy. He pointed to increased remittances and identified information technology, innovation, agriculture, industry, employment, education and skills training as key areas for national development.

The prime minister also praised the armed forces for their role in defending the country and stressed Pakistan’s commitment to protecting its national interests. He called for unity among political parties and society while reaffirming support for the people of occupied Kashmir and Palestinians and advocating diplomatic solutions to regional disputes.

On Pakistan Independence Day 2026, the country’s military leadership also renewed its pledge to defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity. Chief of Defence Forces and Army Chief Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, Naval Chief Admiral Naveed Ashraf and Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu urged citizens to uphold the principles of faith, unity and discipline.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar stressed sovereignty, peaceful dispute resolution and stronger international partnerships. He said Pakistan’s progress in science, technology, education, culture and economic development reflected national resilience, while urging citizens to strengthen institutions, preserve unity and work toward a prosperous and peaceful future.
