Pakistan, Qatar to Support US-Iran Talks

Pakistan and Qatar will continue coordinating with technical working groups established under the ongoing US-Iran talks, according to Foreign Office spokesperson Tahir Hussain Andrabi. He said both countries remain committed to supporting diplomatic efforts aimed at advancing dialogue and promoting regional stability.

Speaking during a weekly media briefing in Islamabad, Andrabi said Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian recently visited Pakistan at the invitation of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. During the visit, the Iranian leader held separate meetings with President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, focusing on bilateral relations and regional developments.

The spokesperson noted that the second round of US-Iran talks took place on June 21 in Bürgenstock, Switzerland. He said Pakistan played an active role in facilitating discussions, with senior Pakistani leadership participating in efforts to move the peace process forward.

According to Andrabi, three dedicated technical working groups have been established for the next phase of negotiations. The first group is examining issues related to Iran’s nuclear programme, while the second is focused on sanctions and frozen assets. The third group is discussing developments related to Lebanon and regional security.

He added that Pakistani and Qatari technical teams would remain in close contact with their American and Iranian counterparts to assist in implementing agreements reached during the negotiations. Continued engagement is expected to support progress in the broader US-Iran talks framework.

The Foreign Office also welcomed international recognition of Pakistan’s efforts to promote peace in the region. Andrabi said several countries had appreciated Pakistan’s constructive role, while the national media was also praised for its responsible coverage of sensitive diplomatic developments.

Commenting on Pakistani citizens being held hostage near the Somali coast, Andrabi said Islamabad remains in contact with Somali authorities and other relevant stakeholders. He emphasized that securing the safe release of the affected Pakistanis remains a priority for the government alongside its ongoing diplomatic initiatives.
