Pakistan Reaffirms Firm Stance on Water Rights Amid Indus Waters Treaty Debate

Federal Minister for Climate Change Musadik Malik has reiterated Pakistan’s firm position on protecting its water resources, stating that the country will not compromise on its share of water under any circumstances. He made the remarks during a joint press conference with Information Minister Atta Tarar in Islamabad.

Addressing the media, Musadik Malik said Pakistan has consistently maintained that access to its allocated water is a matter of national importance. He emphasized that the country would strongly defend its water rights and oppose any attempt to interfere with its legally recognized share.

The minister questioned the principle of upstream countries restricting water flows to downstream states, arguing that equitable access to shared water resources is a fundamental international principle. He added that Pakistan has always stood for protecting its legitimate rights and would continue to do so.

Musadik Malik also criticized India’s position regarding the Indus Waters Treaty, alleging that New Delhi is backing away from its treaty obligations. He further accused Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi of attempting to use water as a tool of pressure against Pakistan.

Speaking at the same press conference, Information Minister Atta Tarar stated that the Indus Waters Treaty cannot be suspended unilaterally. He said Pakistan’s leadership has consistently described water security as a matter directly linked to the country’s survival and long-term national interests.

Tarar also announced that international experts from around the world are expected to participate in an upcoming conference focused on global water issues. According to him, the event will provide an opportunity to discuss the significance of the Indus Waters Treaty and Pakistan’s perspective on regional water management.
