Pakistan ADB loan agreement

Pakistan Signs $700 Million Loan Agreement with Asian Development Bank

A major development in Pakistan ADB cooperation emerged as Pakistan signed a Pakistan ADB loan agreement worth $700 million with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to support financial sector reforms and insurance industry development.

According to the Ministry of Economic Affairs, the funding will be provided under the Insurance Transformation Program’s sub-program SP-1. Out of the total amount, $250 million will be offered on concessional terms, providing significant financial support to Pakistan’s reform agenda.

The agreement was signed by Secretary Economic Affairs Muhammad Humair Karim on behalf of Pakistan, while Deputy Country Director Hussain Haider represented the Asian Development Bank during the signing ceremony.

Officials stated that the Asian Development Bank remains a trusted development partner for Pakistan. The Pakistan ADB loan agreement is expected to strengthen financial governance and support long-term structural reforms.

The program aligns with Pakistan’s broader initiatives, including “Uraan Pakistan,” SECP’s five-year roadmap for insurance sector development, and the National Financial Inclusion Strategy, aiming to improve stability and inclusivity.

ADB officials said the initiative is designed to encourage competition in the insurance sector by facilitating the entry of new companies and promoting fair market practices.

The program will also increase private sector participation in insuring public assets and strengthen regulatory frameworks and consumer protection mechanisms across the financial system.
