Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is set to consult President Asif Ali Zardari over the situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, as the federal government reviews options including KP emergency and governor rule. An important meeting has been called at the Aiwan-e-Sadr.
According to sources, the meeting will discuss the political and security situation in the province. The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s planned October 4 long march towards Islamabad will also be considered during the consultation.
Sources said Prime Minister Shehbaz is expected to brief President Zardari on the developments in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The discussions come amid growing political tensions between the federal government and the PTI-led provincial administration.
The issue of KP emergency and governor rule has been under discussion in recent federal meetings. On Thursday, a meeting chaired by the prime minister reviewed constitutional and legal aspects of possible measures concerning the province.
Officials are also examining the security situation and recent terrorism-related incidents in the province. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi briefed the prime minister on security developments, while Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar discussed constitutional and legal considerations.
The federal government had previously discussed both emergency and governor’s rule but, according to informed sources, no immediate decision was taken. The government has also been considering whether PTI will reconsider its October 4 march.
The consultation between Prime Minister Shehbaz and President Zardari will therefore provide an opportunity to review the available constitutional options. The meeting comes as the October 4 PTI march and the security situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa remain central issues in federal discussions.
