A severe Khyber Pakhtunkhwa rainstorm has claimed at least seven lives and injured 33 others across multiple districts in northwestern Pakistan, according to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA).
The incidents occurred over the past 24 hours as heavy rainfall and strong winds caused roofs and walls to collapse in Bannu, Shangla, and Mansehra. Among the victims were two children, four men, and one woman, highlighting the human toll of the extreme weather.
The PDMA reported that the injured include 14 children, 12 women, and seven men, many of whom were shifted to nearby hospitals for emergency treatment. Rescue operations continued in affected areas as authorities assessed the damage caused by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa rainstorm.
Officials have also issued warnings about the risk of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) in northern regions of the province. Rising temperatures combined with recent rainfall have accelerated glacier melting, increasing the likelihood of sudden flooding.
District administrations in Chitral, Upper and Lower Dir, Swat, Kohistan, and Mansehra have been placed on high alert. Authorities have been instructed to monitor vulnerable areas closely and ensure rapid response mechanisms are in place.
Residents in low-lying and river-adjacent areas have been advised to avoid crossing seasonal streams and to stay away from riverbanks due to the ongoing unstable weather conditions and potential flash floods.
The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa rainstorm has once again highlighted the region’s vulnerability to climate-related disasters, with officials urging preparedness as weather patterns become increasingly unpredictable.
