Karachi: Sindh Minister for Labour and Human Resources Saeed Ghani has revealed that corruption worth more than Rs20 billion was detected within his department, stating that he is facing significant pressure over the matter but remains committed to holding those responsible accountable.
Speaking as the chief guest at the All Pakistan Women Workers Conference organized by the Home-Based Women Workers Federation at the Arts Council of Pakistan in Karachi, Ghani said the scale of financial irregularities uncovered in the department exceeded Rs20 billion. He emphasized that his administration is determined to pursue legal action against those involved.
The minister noted that various attempts have been made to influence the investigation process. However, he stressed that neither political nor administrative pressure would prevent the government from taking action against individuals found responsible for corruption.
Addressing labour rights, Ghani stated that workers should not be forced to accept wages below Rs40,000. He argued that fair compensation is essential for improving the living standards of labourers and ensuring economic justice in society.
He further remarked that protecting a ministerial position should never come at the expense of principles and transparency. According to Ghani, he would rather step down from office than compromise on accountability and the public interest.
Highlighting the role of the Sindh government in labour welfare, he said Sindh was the first province in Pakistan to formally recognize home-based workers. He added that the government has taken several steps to provide legal recognition and protection to workers, particularly women working from home.
