UAE Bans Social Media Accounts for Children Under 15

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has introduced strict new regulations prohibiting children under the age of 15 from creating, using, or operating personal social media accounts. The new rules are aimed at strengthening online child protection and increasing the responsibility of digital platforms.

Under the new policy, children younger than 15 will no longer be allowed to access social media accounts, even with parental permission. The government has removed any exemptions that previously allowed parents or guardians to authorize account creation for minors.

To enforce the regulation, social media companies will be required to implement digital identity (Digital ID) verification and AI-powered age verification systems. These measures are intended to accurately verify users’ ages before allowing access to online platforms.

Authorities have warned that platforms failing to prevent underage users from accessing their services could face financial penalties, regulatory action, or operational restrictions. The government expects technology companies to fully comply with the new requirements.

In addition to blocking new registrations, social media platforms must also identify and deactivate existing accounts belonging to children under the age of 15. Companies have been given a 12-month transition period to implement the necessary technical and operational changes.

According to Arab media reports, the UAE Cabinet approved the new regulations as part of broader efforts to create a safer digital environment for children. Officials say the policy is designed to reduce online risks, including exposure to harmful content, cyberbullying, and privacy threats.
