7.0-Magnitude Earthquake Kills 16 in Tibet, China

A powerful China earthquake measuring 7.0 in magnitude killed 16 people and injured 65 in Tibet, southwestern China, according to media reports. The earthquake struck on Thursday night, causing widespread damage and prompting emergency response operations across the affected area.

Reports said the strong tremors caused hundreds of houses to collapse, leaving residents facing dangerous conditions. The extent of the destruction has raised concerns about the safety of people living in the affected mountainous region. Rescue operations are underway to locate and assist those affected by the disaster.

Authorities declared an emergency and deployed rescue teams to the affected areas. However, falling rocks blocked roads in several locations, making it difficult for emergency workers to reach communities situated at higher elevations. The challenging terrain has further complicated efforts to provide immediate assistance.

Rescue officials said more than 12,400 people had been moved to safer locations following the earthquake. The evacuations were intended to protect residents from further dangers in affected communities. Electricity supplies were also disrupted, adding to the difficulties faced by people in the disaster-hit region.

The China earthquake also triggered additional tremors near its epicentre, according to the United States Geological Survey. The agency recorded seven aftershocks in the surrounding mountainous area. The strongest of these tremors measured 5.2 in magnitude and occurred at a depth of 10 kilometres.

The aftershocks have added to concerns about conditions in the affected region, where damaged buildings and blocked roads are complicating emergency operations. Rescue teams are working to reach isolated communities and provide assistance to injured residents. The loss of electricity has also created additional challenges for affected households and emergency services.

Authorities continue to respond to the disaster as reports emerge about casualties and damage. The reported death toll stands at 16, while 65 people have been reported injured. With thousands evacuated and access to some areas restricted by rockfalls, rescue and relief efforts remain focused on reaching affected communities and ensuring residents’ safety.
