Ukraine drone strikes St. Petersburg overnight, targeting military and energy infrastructure in one of the deepest attacks inside Russian territory since the war began. The operation coincided with the opening of Russia’s flagship international economic forum, an event closely associated with President Vladimir Putin.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said long-range drones traveled more than 1,000 kilometers to strike an oil terminal in St. Petersburg, triggering a large fire and sending thick black smoke into the sky. Russian authorities confirmed attacks on infrastructure but released limited details about the damage.
The Ukraine drone strikes St. Petersburg also reportedly targeted the Kronstadt naval base, where Ukrainian officials claimed a Russian Baltic Fleet warship was damaged. In addition, a defense-related manufacturing facility in Russia’s Tambov region was reportedly hit during the overnight operation.
The attack came as Russia hosted the annual St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, often referred to as “Russia’s Davos.” The event is considered one of Moscow’s most important platforms for attracting investment and showcasing economic opportunities despite ongoing international sanctions.
Meanwhile, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte arrived in Kyiv for an unannounced visit focused on security cooperation and Ukraine’s air defense requirements. Ukrainian officials continue to seek additional support as Russian missile and drone attacks intensify.
President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed frustration over delays in acquiring additional Patriot air defense systems, saying agreements exist but implementation has been slowed by financial and technical obstacles. Ukraine has repeatedly warned that stronger air defenses are needed to counter Russian ballistic missile attacks.
The latest Ukraine drone strikes St. Petersburg occurred amid a broader exchange of attacks between the two countries. While Ukraine targeted Russian energy and military assets, Russian forces launched nearly 200 drones toward Ukraine overnight. The continuing escalation highlights the prolonged nature of the conflict, with both sides increasing long-range operations far from the front lines.
