Türkiye security guarantees for Ukraine moved into focus after Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan announced that Ankara will lead the maritime component of future security arrangements for Ukraine. The announcement underscores Türkiye’s growing diplomatic and strategic role in efforts to support regional stability.
Speaking on Thursday, Fidan reaffirmed Türkiye’s commitment to the Istanbul negotiation process, saying direct talks between Russian and Ukrainian officials had created valuable opportunities for dialogue and transparency. He stressed that diplomatic engagement should continue despite ongoing fighting.
The foreign minister said the Istanbul format remains an important platform for negotiations. According to Fidan, maintaining communication between the two sides is essential for reducing tensions and creating conditions for a broader peace agreement.
Discussing post-war planning, Türkiye security guarantees for Ukraine would likely include land, air and maritime components. Fidan revealed that Türkiye has agreed to coordinate and lead the naval element of these security guarantees in cooperation with allied countries.
He said Ankara and its partners share a common understanding regarding the maritime mission. Planning is already underway, with the naval forces of participating allied nations working on the operational framework for future cooperation.
Fidan also noted that while the United States later joined broader diplomatic efforts, the conflict continues with an increasing risk of escalation. He emphasized that negotiations should remain active even during periods of military confrontation.
Türkiye has positioned itself as a key mediator since the beginning of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, hosting several rounds of negotiations and facilitating diplomatic contacts. Officials say continued dialogue and coordinated international efforts remain essential for achieving a lasting peace.
