Islamabad: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has ordered that local government elections in the federal capital be held under the Islamabad local government law of 2015, directing officials to issue the election schedule on the same day.
A five-member commission, headed by Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja, heard proceedings concerning delays in holding local government elections in Islamabad. The hearing focused on the pending electoral process in the federal capital.
Following the hearing, the chief election commissioner announced a short order directing that the local government polls be conducted in accordance with the 2015 legislation. The directive establishes the legal framework under which the commission has been instructed to proceed with the elections.
The ECP chief also directed the commission’s officials to issue the local government election schedule immediately, with instructions for it to be released on the same day as the hearing.
The order comes amid concerns over delays in conducting local government elections in Islamabad. The electoral process is significant for determining local representatives who oversee civic matters and represent residents at the municipal level.
The Election Commission is responsible for organizing the electoral process and announcing the relevant schedule. The timing of subsequent election activities will depend on the official notification and the procedures specified by the commission.
