ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s electricity purchase price may reach Rs27.309 per kilowatt-hour from January 1, 2027, according to preliminary estimates for the upcoming tariff review. The projected amount is equivalent to approximately Rs27.31 per unit, although the final applicable tariff will depend on the relevant review and approval process.
The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has projected a total electricity purchase cost of Rs3.55 trillion under the baseline estimates for the upcoming review period. The projected expenditure forms part of the cost calculations used in determining electricity tariffs for consumers served by the country’s former WAPDA distribution companies.
The proposed estimates are linked to the next electricity tariff review, which is expected to take effect from January 1, 2027. The review will assess the underlying costs associated with electricity procurement and establish the reference cost used in the tariff-setting process.
A revised reference cost is an important component of electricity pricing because it provides a financial basis for calculating the rates applicable during the upcoming period. The estimates are intended to help determine the costs that will be considered when setting electricity tariffs for eligible consumers.
