Balochistan Wheat Crisis Deepens as Flour Prices Surge Across Quetta

Quetta: The wheat crisis in Balochistan has reportedly intensified, with rising flour prices putting additional pressure on consumers in Quetta and several other districts across the province.

According to sources, the Balochistan government has so far been unable to purchase even 100,000 sacks of wheat from the Pakistan Agricultural Storage and Services Corporation (PASSCO). Discussions between the provincial Food Department and PASSCO have reportedly continued for several months without a finalized purchase.

Meanwhile, market sources report that the price of a 20-kilogram flour bag in Quetta has climbed to Rs 3,330. The increase has added to concerns among households already struggling to manage essential food expenses.

The situation is also affecting other parts of the province. Market sources indicate that a 50-kilogram flour sack has exceeded Rs 8,000 in Khuzdar, Chagai, Washuk, Kech, and several other districts, highlighting the pressure on local flour markets.

Balochistan Food Secretary has stated that negotiations with PASSCO are ongoing to secure wheat supplies for the province. However, an agreement and the subsequent availability of wheat will be important factors in determining whether supply conditions improve.

The Food Secretary also said that determining flour prices and ensuring compliance with official rates fall under the responsibilities of the Industries Department and deputy commissioners. This places price regulation and enforcement within the remit of the relevant departments and district administrations.

The reported wheat procurement delays and high flour prices have raised concerns about food affordability across Balochistan. Consumers and market participants will be watching for developments in wheat procurement, flour supply, and price enforcement as authorities continue discussions with PASSCO.
