Iran Stops Two Oil Tankers Near Strait of Hormuz

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Navy has reported stopping two oil tankers in waters south of the Strait of Hormuz following separate incidents. The force said the vessels ignored radio warnings and attempted to use an unauthorized route through the strategic waterway. The development comes amid continued tensions surrounding maritime security in the region.

According to a statement released on Friday, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy identified the two tankers as being involved in incidents near the important shipping route. Iranian authorities said the vessels continued their passage despite receiving radio warnings. The force subsequently stopped both tankers in waters south of the Strait of Hormuz.

The IRGC Navy described the route used by the vessels as unauthorized. However, the available statement did not provide further details about the tankers’ identities, ownership or cargo. It also did not clarify whether the vessels would remain under Iranian control or when they might be allowed to continue their journeys.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important maritime routes for international energy supplies. Oil tankers regularly use the passage to transport crude oil and petroleum products to global markets. Any disruption to shipping activities in the area can raise concerns about energy security and international trade.

Separately, Iran announced that its forces had destroyed a US unmanned vessel in the eastern Strait of Hormuz on Friday. The claim added to concerns about military activity and maritime security in the strategically important waterway. However, the Iranian announcement did not provide further technical details about the reported incident.

The United States military had not immediately confirmed Iran’s claim regarding the destruction of the unmanned vessel. No independent confirmation of the incident was available at the time of the report. The circumstances surrounding the reported encounter therefore remained unclear.

The two developments highlight continuing tensions around the Strait of Hormuz and surrounding waters. The reported tanker interceptions and the claim involving a US unmanned vessel could further draw attention to regional maritime security. However, additional information from the countries involved will be needed to establish the full circumstances of both incidents.
