KARACHI: A criminal court in Karachi has sentenced a police officer to death after finding him guilty in a case involving the alleged staging of a fake police encounter that resulted in the death of a young man. The verdict was announced by the Model Criminal Court East.
The court awarded the death penalty to police officer Shehryar for his role in the killing of Aamir during a staged encounter in the Gulistan-e-Johar area. The judgment followed legal proceedings in which the prosecution presented evidence against the accused officers.
The court also sentenced two co-accused police personnel, identified as Nasir and Faisal, to life imprisonment for their involvement in the incident. Additionally, all three convicted officers were directed to pay Rs500,000 each as compensation to the family of the deceased.
According to the prosecution, Shahin Force personnel signalled Aamir to stop in the Gulshan-e-Iqbal area. When he allegedly failed to comply with their instructions, the police officers pursued him and followed him into a residential apartment.
The prosecution further stated that the officers opened fire on Aamir inside the residential building, resulting in his death. Initially, the police personnel presented the incident as an encounter, claiming it had occurred during an operation.
However, subsequent developments led to legal action against the officers, with a criminal case registered against the accused at Shahrah-e-Faisal Police Station in 2022. The investigation and subsequent trial examined the circumstances surrounding Aamir’s death and the police account of the incident.
