Jasprit Bumrah Back for First England ODI

India welcomed back Jasprit Bumrah for the opening One-Day International against England at Edgbaston after the pace spearhead was rested during the recent T20 series. England captain Harry Brook won the toss and elected to bat first, setting up an important start to the three-match ODI series.

Jasprit Bumrah returned to India’s playing XI as the team management continued to carefully manage his workload ahead of upcoming international assignments, including preparations for the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup. The fast bowler had missed India’s T20 campaign against England to remain fresh for the longer white-ball format.

India captain Shubman Gill said his side would also have preferred to bowl first but viewed the series as an opportunity to test different combinations in English conditions. Gill noted that playing in similar conditions could help India prepare for the 2027 World Cup in South Africa while giving less experienced players valuable match exposure.

Virat Kohli, who has retired from Test and T20 international cricket, was included in the ODI squad. The veteran batter’s appearance has drawn attention as this could be his final ODI series in England. Kohli’s experience is expected to play a key role in India’s batting lineup throughout the series.

Gill also recalled his memorable performances at Edgbaston, where he produced record-breaking scores during last year’s Test match. He expressed confidence that India could build on those positive memories and begin the ODI series with a strong performance.

England retained the playing XI announced before the match. Captain Harry Brook said his team preferred batting first, believing the pitch could offer more assistance to bowlers later in the game. Before the start, Jos Buttler received a commemorative cap for reaching 200 ODI appearances for England, presented by former captain Eoin Morgan.

The three-match series is expected to provide both teams with valuable preparation for future ICC tournaments. With Jasprit Bumrah back in action and experienced players on both sides, the contest promises to be a closely fought battle between two leading white-ball teams.
