Peshawar: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has raised concerns over a potential wheat shortage and a sharp increase in flour prices, urging the federal government to take immediate action to ensure an uninterrupted supply of wheat to the province.
In a letter sent to the federal authorities, the provincial government emphasized the need for urgent intervention to prevent disruptions in the supply chain. Officials warned that delays in wheat transportation could lead to serious market challenges and place additional pressure on consumers.
According to the letter, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is not self-sufficient in wheat production and relies heavily on supplies from Punjab to meet its domestic demand. Any restrictions or obstacles in interprovincial transportation could significantly affect the availability of wheat and flour in local markets.
The provincial government cautioned that continued supply disruptions may result in a substantial increase in flour prices. Authorities fear that the cost of a 40-kilogram flour bag could rise by as much as Rs4,400 if the situation is not addressed promptly.
Officials noted that the provincial cabinet has already approved the purchase of 225,000 metric tons of wheat to strengthen food security and stabilize market conditions. However, delays in transportation and what the government described as unnecessary inspections have reportedly slowed the movement of wheat into the province.
The letter further stated that supply chain interruptions could impact both wheat reserves and market stability, potentially creating difficulties for consumers and businesses dependent on consistent flour availability.
The KP government has called on the federal administration to ensure free interprovincial trade under Article 151 of the Constitution. Provincial authorities argue that removing barriers to wheat transportation is essential to preventing a food supply crisis and protecting consumers from rising prices.
