Pakistan and Brazil agree to strengthen military cooperation

Pakistan and Brazil have agreed to strengthen military cooperation following a meeting between Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Asim Munir and a high-level Brazilian delegation at General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi on Monday.

According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the delegation was led by Brazilian Admiral Renato Rodrigues De Aguiar Freire, chief of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the Armed Forces. The visiting delegation met Field Marshal Munir to discuss bilateral defence relations and security matters.

The meeting focused on issues of mutual interest, the regional security situation and opportunities to expand defence and security cooperation. Both sides expressed satisfaction with their longstanding friendly relations and agreed to strengthen military-to-military collaboration.

Field Marshal Munir reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to improving defence ties with Brazil. The discussions highlighted the importance of continued engagement between the armed forces of both countries.

Admiral Freire praised the professionalism and operational preparedness of Pakistan’s armed forces. He also acknowledged their contributions to regional peace and stability, according to the ISPR statement.

Upon his arrival at GHQ, the Brazilian admiral was presented with a guard of honour by a contingent representing Pakistan’s three armed services. The visit reflects efforts by both countries to deepen military engagement and explore further areas of cooperation.

Pakistan and Brazil have also pursued closer economic relations in the past. In 2018, Brazil’s then-ambassador Claudio Raja Gabaglia Lins visited the Sarhad Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Peshawar. The two sides discussed increasing bilateral trade and establishing a joint chamber of commerce and industry to support businesspeople and investors. The latest meeting signals continued interest in expanding ties, particularly in defence and security.
