Lahore: The Punjab government has imposed Section 144 across the province in preparation for Muharram-ul-Haram, citing security concerns and the need to maintain public order during religious gatherings. The restrictions will remain in force from June 17 to June 26, 2026.
According to a notification issued by the Punjab Home Department, seven categories of restrictions have been introduced to ensure peaceful observance of Muharram. Authorities have emphasized that only officially approved religious processions and gatherings will be permitted during the holy month.
The notification states that the public display of weapons, explosives, and other hazardous materials has been strictly prohibited. The government aims to prevent any activity that could threaten public safety or disrupt religious events.
Officials have also banned provocative slogans, gestures, and actions that may incite sectarian tensions or offend religious sentiments. Statements or comments promoting sectarian, ethnic, or communal hatred will not be allowed during the restricted period.
In addition, the construction of observation posts or temporary structures on rooftops of buildings located along procession routes has been prohibited. Authorities have warned against any preparations that could pose security risks during religious events.
The notification further bans the storage of stones, bricks, bottles, garbage, or any objects on rooftops overlooking procession routes. Spectators will also not be allowed to gather on rooftops, balconies, shop platforms, or other elevated locations situated along the paths of processions.
Most of the restrictions will remain effective from the 1st to the 10th of Muharram. However, the ban on pillion riding will specifically apply on the 9th and 10th of Muharram.
