KP Audit Uncovers Financial Irregularities Worth Over Rs3.58 Billion During PTI Government

PESHAWAR: An audit of various government departments in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has uncovered financial irregularities and questionable expenditures exceeding Rs3.58 billion during the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government’s tenure in the province. The findings have raised concerns about financial management, transparency and compliance with government spending regulations.

According to the audit report, more than Rs1.205 billion worth of contracts were approved through questionable and non-transparent procedures. The report also identified additional payments exceeding Rs908.1 million in development and construction projects, pointing to potential weaknesses in financial oversight and contract management.

The audit further highlighted unauthorized expenditures exceeding Rs600 million. It also identified financial losses of more than Rs378.5 million because authorities allegedly failed to take appropriate action against contractors despite violations of contractual agreements. These findings indicate significant gaps in monitoring public funds and enforcing contractual obligations.

The audit covered the 2024-25 financial year and focused on compliance with established rules and regulations. During the first phase, 14 administrative departments were audited out of 28 Principal Accounting Officers (PAOs) initially selected for examination.

According to the report, the audit exercise assessed financial transactions, contract approvals, development expenditures and compliance with relevant government procedures. The findings highlighted concerns over the transparency of procurement processes and the authorization of public spending across the audited departments.

Meanwhile, audit authorities confirmed that Rs117.09 million was recovered between January and December 2025. The recovery was officially verified by the concerned audit officials, reflecting efforts to recover public money identified during the audit process.
