SLAMABAD: The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has launched a new QR code-based CNIC in Pakistan, introducing a locally manufactured identity card designed to modernize identity verification and reduce dependence on imported microchip technology.
According to NADRA, the new national identity card is manufactured in Pakistan using polycarbonate material. The imported microchip featured in the previous design has been replaced with a secure QR code, creating a new verification mechanism for citizens and authorized organizations across the country.
The QR code can be verified using an ordinary smartphone, while the Pak ID mobile application will allow users to scan and authenticate information stored on the new card. NADRA says the QR code will contain relevant identity details and the cardholder’s photograph, helping improve the accuracy of digital data entry.

The authority said the new system is expected to reduce errors while entering names, addresses and other identity information. QR verification software will also be provided to telecom companies, banks, hospitals, Pakistan Railways, police and other authorized institutions that need reliable identity verification services.
The NADRA new QR code CNIC will feature several special symbols, including a family number and designated markings for persons with disabilities, senior citizens and organ donors. Specific identification markings will also be included for citizens of Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
The new card will display the holder’s name and address in both Urdu and English. NADRA said the QR code-based card is being introduced in phases from August 14, replacing existing cards gradually. From January 2027, the new QR-based format will also be issued for all national identity card categories, including NICOP and Juvenile Cards.
In the final phase, the Pakistan Origin Card (POC) will also transition to the new chip-free QR code format. NADRA clarified that already-issued identity cards will remain valid until their stated expiry dates, meaning existing cardholders will not need to replace valid cards immediately.
