Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has said the Makkah defence agreement between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkiye has strengthened ties among the three countries. He said the pact also sends a message of peace and unity across the region.
The prime minister made the remarks during a meeting with Saudi Minister for Environment, Water and Agriculture Abdulrahman bin Abdulmohsen Al-Fadley in Islamabad on Friday. Shehbaz welcomed the visiting minister and reaffirmed Pakistan’s close and longstanding relationship with Saudi Arabia.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, Shehbaz said the Makkah defence agreement had brought Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkiye closer. He described the arrangement as an important step toward promoting regional unity, peace and stability.
The agreement was signed by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif during a trilateral summit at Al-Safa Palace in Makkah. Under the pact, an attack on one member would be treated as an attack on all three.
Pakistan has said the Makkah defence agreement remains open to other regional countries that are prepared to uphold its core principles. The arrangement is aimed at strengthening collective security and supporting peace and stability in the region and beyond.
During the meeting, Shehbaz also called for stronger economic and agricultural cooperation with Saudi Arabia. He welcomed progress in Pakistan’s agricultural exports to the kingdom and stressed the need to expand trade and investment between the two strategic partners.
The two sides discussed agricultural technology, research, development and more efficient water use. Shehbaz said a delegation of Pakistani agricultural experts would soon visit Riyadh. The Saudi minister reaffirmed his country’s commitment to cooperation with Pakistan in agriculture, water and food security, while the Makkah defence agreement continues to strengthen broader strategic ties.
