A remarkably preserved T. Rex skeleton sold for a record-breaking $51 million at a high-profile auction in New York, marking one of the most expensive dinosaur fossil sales in history. The fossil, nicknamed “GUS,” has attracted worldwide attention because of its exceptional condition and scientific importance.
Estimated to be around 67 million years old, the Tyrannosaurus rex fossil is approximately 80% complete, making it one of the best-preserved T. Rex specimens ever discovered. Standing about 3.8 meters (12.5 feet) tall, GUS offers researchers and collectors a rare glimpse into one of the largest predators to have walked the Earth.
During the auction, the highest bid reached $43 million. After buyer’s fees and associated costs were added, the final purchase price climbed to $51 million, setting a new benchmark for dinosaur fossil auctions and highlighting the growing demand for rare prehistoric specimens.
The fossil was unearthed between 2021 and 2023 during an excavation in Harding County, South Dakota. It was named “GUS” in honor of landowner Gary “Gus” Licking, on whose property the remarkable discovery was made.
According to the auction house, the specimen includes 183 fossilized bone elements. Based on the number of preserved bones, GUS is approximately 61% complete, while estimates based on total bone mass place its completeness between 75% and 80%, making it one of the most significant T. Rex discoveries in recent years.
One of the fossil’s most remarkable features is its exceptionally well-preserved skull, which experts describe as being in outstanding condition. Such preservation provides valuable opportunities for scientific research, educational exhibitions, and further study of Tyrannosaurus rex anatomy and evolution.
