The latest UNFPA Pakistan Youth Report, released on the occasion of World Population Day, presents a detailed picture of Pakistan’s demographic landscape. The report highlights both the opportunities and challenges facing the country’s rapidly growing youth population, emphasizing that young people will play a defining role in Pakistan’s future.
According to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Pakistan’s population has reached approximately 257.2 million, making it one of the world’s most populous countries. The report notes that nearly one-third of the population is between the ages of 10 and 24, underscoring the importance of investing in education, healthcare, and employment opportunities for young people.
One of the report’s key findings is that 76% of Pakistani youth say they are optimistic about the future. The UNFPA suggests that this optimism reflects the aspirations of a generation that seeks better educational, economic, and social opportunities despite existing challenges.
At the same time, the report reveals that 53% of young people are concerned about security, economic difficulties, and inequality. These issues continue to influence the daily lives and future expectations of many young Pakistanis, particularly those living in underserved communities.
The report also draws attention to the digital divide, noting that many young people in rural areas continue to face barriers due to limited internet access. According to the UNFPA, improving digital connectivity is essential for expanding access to education, skills development, and employment opportunities.
The organization has urged policymakers to invest in digital skills training and create more quality employment opportunities for young people. It emphasized that population policy should not focus solely on increasing or decreasing population numbers but should instead prioritize human rights, informed choices, and equal opportunities.
