The United States and China are expected to hold US China AI talks in September as both countries seek to address the risks posed by increasingly powerful artificial intelligence models. According to sources familiar with the matter, the dialogue is likely to take place before Chinese President Xi Jinping’s planned visit to the United States later that month.
The planned discussions are regarded as one of the key outcomes of the summit between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping held in May. While the exact date, venue and final agenda have not been confirmed, preparations for the meeting are already underway.
Sources said the talks are expected to focus on regulating advanced AI systems that could strengthen military capabilities, enable cyberattacks on critical infrastructure and reshape global labour markets. Officials from both countries are also expected to discuss the safe development and deployment of frontier AI models.
According to Reuters, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is expected to lead the American delegation. Other participants from both governments are still being identified as officials continue planning the first official AI dialogue between Washington and Beijing under President Trump’s current administration.
China’s Foreign Ministry said artificial intelligence is a major global challenge and expressed Beijing’s willingness to implement the consensus reached by the two countries’ leaders. The White House and several US government agencies have not officially commented on the planned meeting.
The discussions come amid growing technological competition between the world’s two largest economies. The United States has tightened export controls on advanced AI chips, while also raising concerns about intellectual property and the use of American technology in Chinese AI models. China, meanwhile, is considering restrictions on overseas access to some of its most advanced AI systems.
Experts believe the initial meeting is unlikely to resolve major disagreements but could establish common definitions, communication channels and basic principles for future cooperation. The US China AI talks are expected to become an important platform for managing competition and reducing risks associated with rapidly advancing artificial intelligence.
