KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has once again opposed proposals to create new provinces in Pakistan, saying the country will continue to remain united with its existing four provinces. He stressed that Sindh is among the founding provinces that played an important role in the creation of Pakistan.
Addressing a ceremony in Karachi, Murad Ali Shah said events marking Martyrs’ Day, Air Force Day and Salam Pakistan were being held with dignity and national spirit. He said the occasions provide an opportunity to pay tribute to the sacrifices of those who gave their lives for the country.
The Sindh chief minister said Sindh holds a significant place in the history of Pakistan as one of the provinces that contributed to the country’s creation. According to him, the existing provincial structure should remain intact, and Murad Ali Shah opposes new provinces in the country.
Murad Ali Shah also spoke about the local government system in Sindh. He claimed that Sindh has a functioning local bodies system and said that a similar local government structure does not exist elsewhere in the country.
His latest remarks come amid renewed discussions about the creation of additional provinces in Pakistan. Proposals for new administrative units have surfaced periodically, with supporters arguing that smaller provinces could improve governance and administration. However, the Sindh government has consistently expressed opposition to such proposals.
A few days earlier, Murad Ali Shah had also responded to a proposal reportedly put forward by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi regarding the creation of more provinces. The Sindh chief minister rejected the idea, describing it as an old proposal that has been repeatedly discussed in the past.
