Sweden military satellite operations have officially begun after the country successfully launched its first sovereign defence satellite into orbit. The move marks a major step in Sweden’s efforts to strengthen independent space-based surveillance capabilities.
The satellite was launched on Sunday from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California using a SpaceX rocket. It is the first in a planned network of around ten military satellites expected to be deployed within the next two years.
According to Swedish defence officials, the satellite will enhance the country’s ability to monitor Russian territory, the Baltic Sea region, and surrounding Arctic zones. This comes as Sweden increases its strategic focus on regional security following its NATO membership.
A key objective of the Sweden military satellite program is to reduce reliance on foreign or commercial satellite imagery. Previously, Sweden depended heavily on allied intelligence sources for reconnaissance and surveillance data.
Officials stated that the satellite will provide continuous reconnaissance capabilities and help detect troop movements and potential threats at long distances. It will also support military targeting data for advanced defence systems.
Space Division head Anders Sundeman described the launch as a significant improvement in national defence capability, noting that rapid deployment of additional satellites is necessary due to growing security demands in the region.
The satellite, developed with assistance from Planet Labs, will initially be monitored by its manufacturer before full control is transferred to Sweden’s Air Force Space Operations Center in Uppsala. Officials also confirmed that the system has maneuvering capability to avoid space debris.
Experts say the Sweden military satellite program reflects a wider European trend of increasing investment in space intelligence, especially as geopolitical tensions rise in Eastern Europe and the Baltic region.
