The Fazlur Rehman speech case moved forward on Wednesday after a Gujranwala court issued notices to Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman and the local police on a petition seeking the registration of a criminal case over his recent remarks. The court has fixed July 28 for the next hearing.
The petition was filed by Advocate Manzoor Qadir Bhinder, who requested the court to direct police to register a case regarding the speech. Additional Sessions Judge Faisal Jameel issued notices to the Station House Officer (SHO) of Civil Lines Police Station and Maulana Fazlur Rehman, seeking their responses.
The court also directed the police to submit a detailed report on the matter before the next hearing. The proceedings will determine whether further legal action should be taken based on the contents of the petition and the police report.
The petition relates to a recent speech by Maulana Fazlur Rehman that drew criticism from political leaders and religious figures. The petitioner argued that the remarks warranted legal proceedings under relevant laws. The court has not expressed any opinion on the merits of the allegations at this stage.
The remarks have triggered widespread political debate across Pakistan. Several leaders from different political parties publicly criticized the comments, saying references to the country’s martyrs should be treated with respect and sensitivity.
Pakistan Ulema Council Chairman Allama Tahir Ashrafi also condemned the remarks, expressing regret to the families of the martyrs. He urged public figures to exercise caution when discussing sensitive national issues and to avoid statements that could cause public distress.
The Fazlur Rehman speech case is expected to remain in focus as the court reviews the police report and hears responses from the parties on July 28. The outcome of the proceedings will determine whether the petition leads to the registration of a formal criminal case.
