Speaking in an interview with Indian news agency IANS, Rubio said preparations for the presidential visit are already underway. He added that he is also expected to travel to India later this year to help coordinate discussions and lay the groundwork for Trump’s visit.
The announcement follows a recent meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the Group of Seven (G7) summit in France. Both leaders reportedly held positive discussions, with Trump describing the meeting as “very good.”
India has been encouraging Washington for several months to schedule Trump’s visit. Officials have also explored the possibility of combining the trip with a broader meeting involving Japan and Australia, reflecting growing cooperation among Indo-Pacific partners.

Relations between India and the United States have faced challenges over the past year. Trade tensions increased after Washington imposed higher tariffs on Indian exports, citing India’s purchases of Russian oil, while closer U.S. engagement with Pakistan also created diplomatic concerns in New Delhi.
Despite recent disagreements, both governments appear committed to strengthening strategic and economic ties. If finalized, the trade agreement and the expected presidential visit could mark a significant step toward rebuilding confidence and expanding cooperation in trade, investment, security, and regional affairs.
