European allies have stepped up to address Europe NATO force reductions, with a senior NATO commander saying they have filled most of the capability gaps created by recent changes in US military reinforcement plans. The comments come as NATO members continue adjusting their defense strategies in response to evolving security challenges and shifting responsibilities within the alliance.
Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe John Stringer said European countries had significantly increased their military contributions after the United States reduced the number of forces it would deploy to Europe during a major conflict or crisis. He described the development as evidence of “a stronger Europe in a stronger NATO.”
The United States recently announced changes to its reinforcement plans for Europe, prompting NATO’s military leadership to ask European member states to identify additional forces and resources they could contribute. According to Stringer, European allies responded by strengthening their military commitments and improving readiness across the alliance.
Speaking about Europe NATO force reductions, Stringer explained that where European countries could not match specific US military capabilities, they planned to achieve similar operational outcomes through alternative equipment, technology, and coordinated defense planning. He said the approach ensures that NATO maintains its overall effectiveness.
The senior commander also described the current burden-sharing process as practical and based on military requirements rather than political considerations. He noted that European allies have gradually increased defense contributions over several years and are now better prepared to take on greater responsibilities within NATO.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump renewed his criticism of European NATO members, arguing that many allies still spend too little on defense. He described the existing arrangement as unbalanced and urged European countries to assume a larger share of the alliance’s security responsibilities.
The latest remarks highlight the ongoing transformation of NATO’s defense structure. While the United States remains a key member of the alliance, Europe NATO force reductions have accelerated efforts by European allies to strengthen military capabilities and ensure collective defense remains effective amid changing global security conditions.
