Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is set to embark on his first overseas trip since taking office, with visits to Malaysia and China scheduled over the coming days. The move is being viewed as a significant diplomatic step for the new government.
According to officials from Bangladesh’s foreign ministry, Rahman will first travel to Malaysia before heading to China. The visits are expected to focus on strengthening economic cooperation, trade ties and investment opportunities.
During the China leg of the trip, discussions are likely to include infrastructure development and support for the long-delayed Teesta River project. The initiative aims to improve water management, irrigation systems and river restoration efforts in Bangladesh.
Government officials say the visits reflect Dhaka’s intention to expand economic partnerships and attract greater international cooperation. Strengthening regional connectivity and development projects is expected to be a key objective.
Malaysia remains an important partner for Bangladesh, hosting an estimated 800,000 Bangladeshi workers. Labour issues, employment opportunities and bilateral economic relations are expected to feature prominently in discussions between the two countries.
Relations between Bangladesh and India have experienced challenges since the 2024 political upheaval that led to the removal of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Although ties have improved since Rahman assumed office in February, several issues continue to affect bilateral relations.
Analysts believe the Tarique Rahman China visit and his trip to Malaysia signal a broader effort to diversify Bangladesh’s diplomatic and economic engagements. The tour is expected to play a role in shaping the country’s regional strategy and future international partnerships.
