France Welcomes Lebanon-Israel Framework Agreement

France has welcomed the Lebanon-Israel framework agreement, with Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot expressing support during a phone call with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The French government said the agreement marks an important step toward reducing tensions along the Lebanon-Israel border while advancing regional stability and security.

According to France’s Foreign Ministry, Barrot and Rubio praised the agreement and acknowledged the United States’ decisive diplomatic role in helping secure the deal. The conversation focused on the next steps needed to ensure the framework is successfully implemented and contributes to lasting peace.

Barrot reaffirmed France’s readiness to assist with implementing the Lebanon-Israel framework agreement. He said Paris supports efforts to restore Lebanon’s full sovereignty, strengthen the authority of the Lebanese state, ensure the state’s exclusive control over arms, and facilitate the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Lebanese territory while protecting the security of both countries.

The US-sponsored framework was signed by Lebanon and Israel on June 26. It aims to enable a phased Israeli military withdrawal from Lebanese territory and reduce hostilities along the border following months of heightened conflict. The agreement is viewed as an important diplomatic effort to ease regional tensions.

During the call, Barrot and Rubio also reviewed progress on the memorandum concluded between the United States and Iran on June 14 and formally signed on June 17. The French foreign minister stressed the importance of achieving a robust and verifiable agreement that ensures Iran does not develop nuclear weapons.

The discussion also covered international security issues beyond the Middle East. The two officials exchanged views on the situation in Ukraine following recent G7 discussions and reviewed preparations for the upcoming NATO summit scheduled to take place in Ankara on July 7 and 8.

France’s support for the Lebanon-Israel framework agreement highlights its broader commitment to diplomatic solutions, regional stability and international cooperation. Paris has indicated it is prepared to work with its international partners to help implement the agreement and encourage long-term peace in the region.
