Punjab Increases University Funding by 1100%, Says Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat

Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat has announced a significant increase in funding for public universities across the province, highlighting the government’s commitment to strengthening higher education and research.

Speaking at a ceremony organized by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) Pakistan in Lahore to honor scientists and researchers, the minister said that Punjab’s university funding has been increased by 1100 percent. He described the move as a major step toward improving educational standards and research opportunities.

According to Rana Sikandar Hayat, the budget allocated to public universities in Punjab has risen from Rs2 billion to Rs25 billion. He stated that the enhanced funding will help universities improve infrastructure, academic programs, and research facilities.

The minister also emphasized that vice chancellors have been appointed purely on merit to ensure transparency and effective leadership in higher education institutions. He added that merit-based appointments are essential for achieving long-term academic excellence.

In addition, the Punjab government is expanding its Honhaar Scholarship Program. The scholarship budget is being increased from Rs15 billion to Rs20 billion, allowing more deserving students to access quality higher education without financial barriers.

Rana Sikandar Hayat noted that enrollment in public universities is steadily increasing. He said the growing number of admissions reflects students’ confidence in government-supported educational institutions and the improvements being introduced in the sector.

Highlighting academic achievements, the minister revealed that nearly 40 candidates who successfully passed the CSS examination were students of Punjab University. He praised the institution for producing talented graduates and contributing to the country’s civil services and professional workforce.
